I sent an email out a couple weeks ago that included a recipe for Keto peanut butter cups with monkfuit listed as one of the suggested Keto-friendly sweeteners. I have to thank Apollo Health Coach Kate Kunkel, who reached out and highlighted the importance of staying up to date with research. I learned that erythritol is often an ingredient added to monkfruit sweetener, and Kate shared an article that links erythritol to an increased risk of blood clots.
Personally, I was initially surprised by the potential risks associated with some monkfruit sweeteners, as I always considered them a safe option. It just goes to show how confusing it can be to navigate the world of sweeteners. We’re all in this together, constantly learning and striving to make the best decisions for ourselves and our clients. This has sparked a valuable conversation among us, reminding us to be compassionate with ourselves and continue seeking knowledge. It also reminded me to stick to the rule of avoiding processed foods and focus on more fresh, whole foods, and lots of veggies.
Compassionate conversation when caring
Compassionate conversation is a skill and takes practice. It can be increasingly challenging when speaking with a loved one about memory problems. Four tips to remember are:
- Limit distractions. Even small distractions can unsettle the conversation. Many people with memory loss also have difficulty hearing and staying focused, so keep background noise to a minimum.
- Speak naturally and stay calm. People with memory loss may have trouble remembering your words, but they will remember the feeling.
- Invite the right people. The more people talking, the more confusing the conversation may be.
- Be patient and avoid cutting them off. Allow extra time for responses. It may take them extra time to process. You can express love and compassion by just listening and being attentive.
This week I will be offering a final bonus webinar in the 4 Pillars for Brain Healing Series. I will be discussing Communication that Heals. Register here if you’d like to join the conversation.
Warmly,
Dr. Heather Sandison
