Do Alzheimerogens Cause Alzheimer’s?

I’ve been busy prepping for the next cohort of the Reversing Alzheimer’s Coaching Program to start our group sessions this week. These coaching sessions are one of the biggest joys of my work. I love the community we develop and to personally see everyone incorporate the lifestyle changes with visible results.

One of the topics we dive into extensively is clearing toxins from your body and from your immediate environment.

Researchers at Arizona State University have coined the term “Alzheimerogens” — like carcinogens — environmental toxins that contribute to Alzheimer’s. This article notes that scientists believe that less than 1% of Alzheimer’s is attributed to specific genetic changes and are looking to other factors for the other 99%. Lead researcher Rolf Halden said, “What we know is that genes load the gun; the environment pulls the trigger.”

It is possible to prevent the environment from pulling that trigger, and even possible to reverse the cognitive decline due to environmental triggers.

Chapter 9 of my book, Reversing Alzheimer’s, is titled “Create a Nourishing Brain Environment” and it goes through all areas of your immediate environment from the bathroom to your outdoors. Guidelines for creating a nourishing brain environment start with ensuring it is:

  • Non-toxic
  • Incorporates nature
  • Natural light
  • Quiet, soothing sounds
  • Uncluttered
  • Comfortable
  • Natural scents
  • Few distractions
  • Air Quality

I’d like to give you another sneak peek at a couple paragraphs from the section titled “The Kitchen: Source of Nourishment.”

📖 ### 📖

The kitchen is where we feed ourselves and our loved ones; as such, the focus on optimizing this vital room is on removing sources of chemical contamination in items of cookware, food storage containers, and cleaning products, as well as organizing the fridge and pantry in such a way that eating a nutrient-dense, ketogenic diet is as easy as possible.

Your cookware is important because when pots and pans are heated, they can release toxic chemicals into your food. I know that nonstick pans are super convenient, but the chemicals used to make the nonstick coating are extremely toxic, and the coating is easily damaged by using metal spatulas or cooking spoons, so that pieces of it can flake off and get mixed in with your food. You also want to avoid cookware made with aluminum. While we don’t know that aluminum contributes to Alzheimer’s, it has been found within the tangles in the brains of people who have died with dementia. It makes sense to avoid it. The best choices for cookware are stainless steel and cast iron.

📖 ### 📖

Here’s a kitchen checklist from the companion 68-page Reversing Alzheimer’s Workbook (a pre-order book bonus):

  • Replace nonstick cookware with stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic.
  • Purge as much plastic as you can and use glass storage containers, silicon storage bags, beeswax-coated canvas food wrap, or Corelle dishes instead.
  • Consider hiding knives and the knobs to the stove in a locked drawer.
  • Make keto-friendly foods front and center and either give away or hide unhealthy foods.
  • Replace conventional cleaning products with nontoxic versions each time you run out.

It can be challenging to know where to begin and the book and coaching program will guide you through where to start. Sometimes, we don’t have enough control of our environment or just have too many other concerns while dealing with all the other challenges of cognitive decline. This is the beauty of Marama and Clear Mind Center assisted living facilities. We’ve gone through great lengths to ensure a toxin-free environment from the bedding to the cleaning products we use.

There’s so much more to address and I didn’t even touch on how to detox your body. For a quick resource, I covered my top 5 in this previous email.

I’m so grateful that you are a part of my community. I will continue to provide you with the information you need to prevent and reverse cognitive decline.

Warmly,
Dr. Heather Sandison
