5 Natural Detox Hacks

Revitalize your brain with these tips

Detoxing has been a wellness trend for a long time. Many detox diets are just passing fads, but there is plenty of research proving that proper detoxification is crucial for cognitive health. Removing toxins is one of the key pillars I use in my protocol to reverse Alzheimer’s and dementia. When I work with patients who are struggling to see changes when implementing other diet and lifestyle changes, the breakthrough came when we were able to eliminate the toxic burdens on their system.

Here are my top 5 ways to detoxify naturally for cognitive improvement.

1. Elimination 💩
The #1 way to eliminate toxins is to eliminate – we must remove our bowels every 24 hours. Ways to help with this are:

  • Drinking plenty of water and eating fiber and maintaining a consistent schedule.
  • Adding magnesium citrate right before bed, such as the CALM supplement found in many health food stores, is a good option to help with elimination and sleep as well.

2. Lungs 🫁

Lungs can be exposed to mold, poor air quality and other toxins.

  • Breathwork is a simple practice you can do to clear your lungs every day. Check out last week’s newsletter for more information on breathwork.
  • A good air purifier is another way to keep your lungs clean. I personally recommend Air Oasis.

3. Kidneys 💧

Drinking enough good quality water every day to keep your kidneys functioning optimally.

  • Aim to drink at least half of your bodyweight in ounces every day. So if you weigh 150 lbs, you should aim to drink 75 ounces of water per day.
  • Drink spring water or high-quality filtered water out of glass, ceramic or stainless containers. A recent study found high concentrations of nano plastics in bottled water. This plastic comes off like sawdust and leeches into the water you are drinking.
  • Incorporate a high-quality water filtration system like AquaTru for your drinking water. ($100 OFF AquaTru’s Carafe countertop water purifier, plus FREE pitcher through Feb 12).

4. Liver 🦠
Your liver might have a build up of toxins that can put a stress on other organs, such as hormones or toxins from the environment. I recommend using supplements like these to help process toxins:

5. Skin and Lymphatic System 💆‍♀️
This system runs throughout every corner of the body alongside the venous system, but doesn’t have a pump like the heart and veins. It relies on you to move, so that the larger molecules can move from top of your head to the tips of your toes and back to the liver where the toxins can be processed at. The Lymphatic System plays a vital role in your immune system, processing the toxic debris after you fight off an infection.

Detoxifying this system is my absolute favorite because it is like a spa day! Here’s a long list of some of  the fun things you can do to detox:

  • Go to the sauna, do contrast hydrotherapy with a hot sauna followed by a cold plunge.
  • Get a lymphatic massage.
  • Jump on a trampoline or move with devices that vibrate like the exercise power plate (20% discount available with code DRSANDISON).
  • Apply castor oil packs with heat to the abdomen.
  • Lay on a heat mat like this HigherDOSE PEMF mat.

Working on this system has a double benefit of being a nervous system reset. You can detoxify stress and stress hormones like cortisol and maintain a balance between the sympathetic flight-or-fight state and the parasympathetic relax state.

While these detox steps are super important, I want to emphasize how important it is to stop your current exposure to toxins. If you want to dive in a little deeper on what that looks like, you can watch my webinar on the non-toxic environment we have at Marama
